Are we there yet!

Team Anna has done something incredible for all of us. The media is celebrating high TRP ratings, intellectuals are happy about the middle-class movement and rise of Democracy, Dhoni & team are being assaulted by Brutal Brits in-front of less interested audience, Rajnikant may be slowly recovering from his illness without being questioned about his super powers :) and above all, Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms are enjoying increased activity.

Without questioning effectiveness of the Lokpal bill or Anna's methods, I would like to ask a hypothetical question. Are we truly ready to be part of a corruption free society? Before your spirit - high on Anna's movement & media hype- jump to a positive answer, let me elaborate the question.

Consider the following situations - I am pretty sure that everyone of us has been in these situations multiple times:
  1. You are riding a bike without helmet or driving into a 'no-entry' zone or parked at a no-parking site. After being caught, what would be your first instinct, offer mere bribe or ask for a duly-signed fine receipt?
  2. You are planning to buy a house - a common middle class dream - and the broker offers you two prices, actual price with higher tax or lower price but with significant black-money.
  3. You are traveling without a confirmed seat. Won't you try to bribe the TTE for some favors.
  4. Knowingly or unknowingly teaching your kid that bribing is the only way to get work done in India.
  5. Produce fake receipts, like medical bills, house rent slip etc, just to avail some extra concession while filing Income Tax Return.
  6. You missed to vote. (Believe me it's not a crime yet :P)
  7. etc. etc. etc.
Moral of the story is that we all have been part of this black-money & corrupt mechanism. And we continue to remain the same. While we furiously support Anna's movement on virtual and actual platforms, we are not making ourselves ready for the changed society. While we are asking the politicians, IPS/IAS officers to reveal their net asset, we intentionally hide our income from Income Tax Department India.  Is it morally correct?

Let the government look for the 'magical wand' to resolve this issue, let Mr. Anna go on fasting and let the media capitalize the situation. Shouldn't we go the extra mile and support the issue? Shouldn't we try not to bribe - if not for forever- for one year or for a month or at least for a day? Shouldn't we say no to the black money? or should we just opt for the easier option - lets just pray that the Anna's version of Lokpal bill is good enough to make this country corruption free.
Amen!

The Things you have mentioned are called systematical corruption which has been inherited in the citizens because of system we were leaving. So if there is a solution, which can eradicate all kind of these systematic corruption is change in the system and that is what being tried out.
For E.g. - If you have lesser corruption at the top-level, you will have enough money in govt funds for public servants as salary. Hence need for corruption will be lesser.
We can not just lay back and say OK whole india is corrupt and everyone has to be non-corrupt to start a movement. That is just to keep himself out of the problem. We are in deep mud and we have to start crawling out of this. We may fall down multiple time due to sticky grounds.

No Sir! I am not talking about systematical corruption, I am talking about personal greed. I am not questioning traffic Cop for asking bribe, I am blaming people like us who don't insist on paying actual fine. I am blaming people like us who can afford to pay thousands as Income Tax, but still produce fake bills for concession.

I am not saying that we don't need Lokpal bill. I am just saying that we don't need to wait for any bill to start changing ourselves. As you said, we are in deep shit, but we can starting being the change that we want in the society.

Talking about your example, higher salary is not a remedy of personal greed. Had it been the case, people like us who earn 10L or 15L or more per year, won't forge documents to pay less tax.

I am totally agree with Ritesh. If we want change something and effective also we should change our-self first, and don't compare to other, and also at least we should not contribute to mud.

Effectiveness of any bill is depend on mentality of society. We should contribute to society by cleanup of ourself.

Sir, I never said we don't have personal greed. Even other country will have same but should system allow that personal greed to be facilated. Few e.g.

1. You were in US few years, were u used to behave same way as you behave in india. No, because US system does not allow that and Indian system allows. Many indians working in US behaves completely different in india in terms of filling taxes, bribe etc. Because we don't have strong enough system to prevent that to happen. I agree system and people happen hand to hand but same person can behave differently in a effective system or not so effective system.

2. Regarding filling income tax ki chori, do u know any person who has been caught by income tax department for the chori of tax. You go and ask that person, will he ever try to do that. I have a example in my office, a person was called by income tax department for not declaring his short term capital gain. He had to pay lot of fines for doing so. I don't think in near future he will every try to do so. And hearing his stories, our team had made sure we don't fall in the same place. So here is example, where a system works effectively, personal greed can be contained and distroyed.

3. You commented about downloading movies from wrong sources, i ask will u ever download a movie if you get just one call from web crime branch. Answer is NO. But system is not there and if there does not work effectively.

4. I agree we don't need to wait for lokpal bill to start changing ourselves. You will agree in many aspects we have changed and movement itself is a indication that we are ready to change but system also have to change if reflection has to be there on whole country and society.

5. By higher salary, i meant for govt officers. Govt employees are not paid enough compare to private employees hence they feel it is their birth right to take bribe. By no means this will solve the problem but at least some honest men will not be forced to take bribe because he gets enough from govt.

So i think our thoughts are in reasonance, personal greed is part of problem but to contain that greed system also have to change. We can not wait for whole society for to be ready for that system change. Hence the LOKPAL. and not only LOKPAL, effective implementation of LOKPAL in the monitoring of whole people.
